In AD 285, Emperor Diocletian divided the Roman Empire into Eastern and Western halves.
In AD 330, Emperor Constantine moved the capital to Constantinople.
In AD 476, the Germanic leader Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustus. This is generally regarded as the end of the Western Roman Empire.
The Eastern Roman Empire, also known as the Byzantine Empire, continued for nearly 1,000 more years, until Constantinople fell to the Ottomans in AD 1453.
(Economic)—— "Technology had not improved because farmers relied on slaves rather than new tools"。
Name the 4 categories of problems that led to Rome's fall. Give one example for each.
✅ 满分示范:"① Political: most emperors were inexperienced and corrupt — often assassinated. ② Social: citizens lost their sense of citizenship; plagues killed millions. ③ Economic: inflation devalued currency, and heavy taxes caused hardship. ④ Military: barbarian invasions and unreliable mercenaries weakened the army. These 4 problems fed each other — a weak economy meant no money for the army, which let barbarians invade, which destroyed the economy further."
2:Internal vs External
例题:Was Rome destroyed by internal or external factors?
开门见山 take a stance("primarily internal, but external triggered it")
用 analogy ("a sick person + a virus")
Rome fell primarily due to internal weaknesses, with external invasions acting as triggers. Internally, Rome suffered from corrupt emperors, hyperinflation, technology stagnation (farmers relied on slaves), and loss of citizenship pride. Externally, barbarian groups (Visigoths, Vandals, Huns) crossed the borders. But these barbarians had existed for centuries — Rome only fell when internal decay made it unable to resist. Like a person catching a cold: the virus exists everywhere, but only a sick person dies from it."
What happened in AD 285 and AD 476?
AD 285: Emperor Diocletian divided the Roman Empire into Eastern and Western halves — recognizing the empire was too large to govern as one. AD 476: the Germanic leader Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustus — marking the end of the Western Roman Empire. (Ironically, the last emperor shared his name with Rome's founder.) The Eastern Empire — now called the Byzantine Empire — survived until AD 1453, when Constantinople fell to the Ottomans."
Did the Roman Empire really 'fall' in AD 476?
反驳标准说法("only the Western half fell")
Only partially. AD 476 ended the Western Roman Empire. But the Eastern Roman Empire (also called the Byzantine Empire), with its capital at Constantinople, continued for nearly 1,000 more years — until AD 1453. The Byzantines preserved Roman law (Justinian Code), Greek language and philosophy, and developed Orthodox Christianity. So Rome's total lifespan was over 1,500 years, not 500."
Which problem was the biggest cause of Rome's fall? Write a PEEL paragraph (~150 words).
P (Point):选 1 个原因 take a stance
E (Evidence):
E (Explain) + L (Link):
P: The biggest cause of Rome's fall was political problems, especially weak emperors. E: From AD 235-284, Rome saw 26 emperors in 50 years, most assassinated. After Diocletian split the empire in AD 285, the two halves stopped helping each other. Emperor Constantine moving the capital to Constantinople in AD 330 further weakened the West. E (Explain): Weak emperors meant bad decisions across all areas: they couldn't fix inflation, couldn't reform the army, couldn't manage barbarian threats. L: Without political stability, the other 3 problems (social, economic, military) spun out of control. Like a sick body without a brain — Rome had the resources to survive, but no leadership to use them."
① 4 类问题不能漏(Political/Social/Economic/Military)—— 必背英文
